Chang’e-6: Historic Lunar Mission by China

China’s Chang’e-6 mission has successfully returned the first rock samples from the moon’s far side, landing in Inner Mongolia. This historic achievement marks a significant advancement in China’s lunar exploration, with future missions set to explore water ice on the moon.
China’s Chang’e-6 lunar mission achieved a historic milestone by successfully returning the first rock samples from the moon’s far side to Earth.

The re-entry capsule, containing up to 2 kg of lunar material, landed in the Siziwang Banner grasslands of Inner Mongolia at 2.07 pm Beijing time on Tuesday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping lauded the mission, emphasizing its importance in advancing China’s aerospace capabilities.

The Chang’e-6 mission, launched from Wenchang spaceport on Hainan island on May 3, conducted surface sampling in the South Pole-Aitken basin and returned on June 20.

These samples are expected to offer insights into the geological differences between the moon’s near and far sides.

The mission is a continuation of China’s lunar exploration efforts, which include future plans to explore water ice near the lunar south pole with the Chang’e-7 and Chang’e-8 missions.
