Hong Kong Experiences a Dry December in 2024

Unusually Dry Weather Leads to Minimal Rainfall and Temperature Fluctuations
With less moisture in the lower atmosphere over the coast of southern China, December 2024 was much drier than usual in Hong Kong.

Only traces of rainfall were recorded in the month, marking it as one of 11 Decembers with just traces of rainfall since records began in 1884.

The annual total rainfall of 2,309.7 millimetres was about 5 percent below the annual normal of 2,431.2 millimetres.

The monthly mean temperature was 18.5 degrees, slightly above the December normal of 18.2 degrees.

The weather in Hong Kong was fine and dry on the first two days of the month.

Influenced by an easterly airstream and a subsequent northeast monsoon, the weather remained mainly fine from December 3 to 7, except for cloudy periods in the morning and at night.

With the strengthening monsoon and cloud cover over Guangdong, it became cloudier with cool mornings on December 8 and 9.

As the northeast monsoon moderated, the weather turned warmer with sunny intervals on December 10 and 11, reaching a high of 25.2 degrees, the month's highest temperature.

Under the effect of a dry northeast monsoon, cool mornings with sunny periods occurred from December 12 to 17, with a few light rain patches on the night of December 15.

A renewed winter monsoon made the weather fine and dry from December 18, with temperatures dropping to 11.9 degrees on December 20, the month's lowest temperature.

Clear skies led to significantly lower morning temperatures in the New Territories compared to urban areas from December 19 to 21.

Cloudy weather returned from December 23 to 27 due to a broad cloud band related to tropical depression Pabuk over the southern South China Sea, with light rain on December 23, 25, and 26.

The northeast monsoon brought fine, dry weather by December 28, lasting until the month's end.

The introduction of a fresh easterly airstream brought cloudier conditions and light rain on December 31.

One tropical cyclone occurred over the South China Sea and the western North Pacific in December 2024.
