Hong Kong Strengthens Commitment to Carbon Neutrality with Public Engagement Campaign

The Environmental Campaign Committee launches a new phase in its carbon reduction initiative to promote low-carbon living and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Hong Kong's Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) marked a significant milestone in its Carbon Neutrality Publicity Campaign with the Carbon Reduction Action - Continuation Ceremony, held on January 4 at the Applause Pavilion in Ocean Park.

The event emphasized collective efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and promote sustainable living practices among the city's residents.

Officiating Guests and Key Messages
The ceremony was officiated by the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr. Tse Chin-wan, along with ECC Chairperson Ms. Grace Kwok, Vice-Chairman Mr. Wong Chi-keung, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Environment) Mr. Eddie Cheung, and Commissioner for Climate Change Mr. Arthur Lee.

In his address, Mr. Tse highlighted the success of the Carbon Neutrality Publicity Campaign, initiated in 2022, in raising public awareness about carbon reduction.

The current phase, launched in November 2023, aims to convert this awareness into actionable steps by encouraging citizens to adopt low-carbon lifestyles.

He acknowledged the robust support from nearly 150 strategic and collaborating partners, including public and private organizations, non-profits, and educational institutions, many of whom have committed to integrating innovative, sustainable practices into their operations.

'Looking ahead, I hope the public will continue to integrate carbon reduction actions in their daily lives to contribute to Hong Kong’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050,' Mr. Tse stated.

Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives
At the ceremony, 17 key strategic partners were commended for their dedication to sustainable operations, which include energy-efficient innovations, smart food waste processing systems, green transport initiatives, and carbon reduction education programs.

These measures align with the objectives of the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050, a comprehensive strategy to guide the city towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.

Ms. Grace Kwok underscored the importance of public participation in achieving these goals.

'Through waste reduction at source, energy saving, and green transport, we can establish a culture of low-carbon living.

I urge everyone to inspire their friends and families to adopt greener habits, fostering a more sustainable environment for future generations,' she remarked.

Broad Public Engagement
The ceremony gathered approximately 300 attendees, including corporate representatives, student members of the Ocean Park Conservation Alliance’s Seahorse Rangers, and Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors of the ECC.

These groups play a critical role in disseminating the message of sustainable living and encouraging broader community participation.

Towards a Carbon-Neutral Future
The ECC’s ongoing efforts reflect Hong Kong’s commitment to addressing global climate challenges through public engagement and innovative solutions.

By integrating carbon reduction measures into daily life and business operations, the campaign aims to build momentum towards achieving the city’s ambitious carbon neutrality target by 2050.
