Hong Kong Deposits Rise While Loans Edge Down in February

Total deposits increased by 1.3 per cent as renminbi holdings and money supply also grew
Total deposits with authorized institutions in Hong Kong increased by 1.3 per cent in February 2025. Within this figure, Hong Kong dollar deposits rose by 2.1 per cent and foreign currency deposits grew by 0.6 per cent.

Cumulatively, in the first two months of the year, total deposits rose by 2.7 per cent and Hong Kong dollar deposits increased by 3.4 per cent.

Renminbi deposits in Hong Kong climbed 4.9 per cent in February to reach one trillion thirty-five point three billion yuan, largely due to corporate fund flows.

The total remittance of renminbi for cross-border trade settlement stood at one trillion sixty-four point one billion yuan in February, down from one trillion three hundred seventy-seven point four billion yuan in January.

Total loans and advances fell by 0.2 per cent in February and by 0.5 per cent over the first two months of 2025. Loans for use in Hong Kong, including trade finance, declined by 0.2 per cent, while loans for use outside Hong Kong dropped by 0.4 per cent.

The Hong Kong dollar loan-to-deposit ratio decreased from 75.7 per cent at the end of January to 73.5 per cent at the end of February, reflecting a rise in deposits alongside a reduction in loans.

In terms of money supply, Hong Kong dollar M2 and M3 both rose by 1.8 per cent in February, with a year-on-year increase of 6.8 per cent.

The seasonally-adjusted Hong Kong dollar M1 increased by 4.4 per cent during the month and by 5.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Total M2 and M3, which include foreign currency components, both rose by 0.9 per cent in February and were up by 10.4 per cent year-on-year.
