Hong Kong Health Authorities Issue Advisory on Heat Stroke Prevention During Very Hot Weather

Centre for Health Protection outlines safety measures for vulnerable groups and outdoor workers amid high temperatures
The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of Hong Kong's Department of Health issued a public advisory on June 10 urging residents to take precautions against heat stroke and sunburn during periods of very hot weather.

The warning is particularly directed at individuals engaged in outdoor activities, as well as vulnerable populations including infants, the elderly, pregnant women, individuals with chronic illnesses, and outdoor or manual workers.

To prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses, the CHP recommends that the public carry and drink ample amounts of water and avoid beverages with caffeine or alcohol, which can increase fluid loss.

Specific advice was provided for managing both outdoor and indoor environments under extreme heat conditions.

Preventive measures include wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing; avoiding vigorous physical activity during the hottest parts of the day; and conducting outdoor tasks in the early morning or late afternoon.

For those indoors, adequate ventilation through the use of fans or air-conditioning is advised.

Individuals are also cautioned against staying in parked vehicles.

Employers are encouraged to reschedule work to cooler hours where possible, and ensure shaded rest areas and gradual workload buildup for workers exposed to hot conditions.

The public is further advised to monitor the Ultraviolet (UV) Index released by the Hong Kong Observatory.

When the UV Index reaches six or above, residents should limit direct sun exposure, apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of thirty or higher, and reapply it every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, umbrellas, and UV-blocking sunglasses are also recommended.

If symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath, or confusion occur, individuals are urged to stop activities, rest in a cool place, and seek immediate medical attention if needed.

Further information is available via the Department of Health’s Health Education Infoline, the Centre’s heat stroke and UV radiation webpages, the Hong Kong Observatory’s weather and hiking safety resources, and related advisories issued by the Labour Department concerning heat precautions for outdoor workers.
