Hong Kong Hosts Regional Workshop on Anti-Money Laundering in the Digital Age

Over 60 participants from Asia-Pacific convene to address emerging financial crime challenges
A four-day regional workshop focusing on anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks concluded in Hong Kong on June 12, 2025. Co-organized by the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department and the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the event gathered over 60 participants from customs administrations, government agencies, international organizations, law enforcement bodies, and academic institutions across the Asia-Pacific region.

The workshop, titled "AML Frameworks: Tackling Traditional and Modern Challenges in the Digital Age," aimed to enhance regional cooperation and capacity building in combating financial crimes.

Sessions covered a range of topics, including AML strategies, emerging typologies, regulation of virtual assets, crypto-related crime investigations, the application of regulatory technology (regtech) in financial crime prevention, and international cooperation in AML and counter-terrorist financing.

In his closing remarks, Assistant Commissioner of Customs and Excise (Intelligence and Investigation) Wong Ho-yin emphasized the importance of adaptability, international collaboration, and capacity building in mitigating financial crime risks.

He encouraged participants to build upon the connections established during the workshop to promote intelligence sharing and support cross-border investigations and enforcement cooperation.

Professor David Srolovitz, Dean of Engineering at HKU, highlighted the significance of uniting academia, technology developers, law enforcement authorities, government, and the financial industry to address the complexities of financial crimes in the digital era.

He reiterated HKU Engineering's commitment to driving innovation and education to empower professionals in creating a secure and transparent financial future.

The workshop follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Hong Kong Customs and HKU in December 2024, aimed at strengthening enforcement capabilities in areas such as virtual assets, blockchain technologies, and intellectual property protection.

As the World Customs Organization Vice-Chair for the Asia-Pacific region and a Regional Training Centre, Hong Kong Customs continues to engage with local and international law enforcement agencies to foster knowledge exchange and capacity building in AML efforts.
