Hong Kong to Conduct Smart Motorway Test on Ting Kau Bridge Southbound

Transport Department schedules 15-minute operational trial on June 21 to assess AI-driven traffic management system
On June 14, 2025, the Hong Kong Transport Department announced a scheduled operational test of the Smart Motorway Pilot Scheme on the southbound section of Ting Kau Bridge, heading towards Tsing Yi. The test is set to occur at noon on June 21, 2025, and will last approximately 15 minutes.

During the trial, the fast lane of Ting Kau Bridge southbound will be temporarily closed, while the hard shoulder will be opened for vehicular traffic for the first time.

The speed limit on this section will be reduced to 50 kilometers per hour.

Motorists are advised to adhere to lane control signals and speed limits displayed on-site and follow instructions to ensure safe passage through the area.

The Smart Motorway Pilot Scheme, launched on December 29, 2024, incorporates artificial intelligence technologies, including an Automatic Incident Detection System.

This system assists operation staff of the Tsing Ma Control Area in detecting and managing traffic incidents more efficiently.

As of the end of May 2025, the system has effectively detected a total of 16 traffic incidents on the road section, with 11 incidents identified within 10 seconds, allowing for prompt alerts and responses.

The upcoming operational test aims to evaluate motorists' compliance with control signals and the proper use of the hard shoulder.

The Transport Department will collect relevant operational data during the test to inform future enhancements of the Smart Motorway Pilot Scheme and the broader implementation strategy for smart motorways in Hong Kong.

Ting Kau Bridge, a 1,177-meter-long cable-stayed bridge, connects the northwest New Territories to urban areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

It is a critical component of Route 3 and plays a significant role in facilitating traffic flow between the mainland and the Hong Kong container port.
