Hong Kong Recognises Record-Breaking Blood Donors at Annual Ceremony

Over four thousand donors honoured for multiple donations as blood donation culture grows in Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) held its Annual Donor Award Ceremony on June 14 to recognise individuals and organisations for their contributions to the city’s blood supply.

A total of four thousand and eighty-one donors who each donated blood twenty-five times or more during the 2024–2025 period were commended, marking a new record for the third consecutive year.

Officiating guests at the ceremony included the Under Secretary for Health, Dr Libby Lee; Hospital Authority (HA) Chairman, Mr Henry Fan; HA Chief Executive, Dr Tony Ko; Chairperson of the Hong Kong Red Cross, Dr Lau Chor-chiu; and Chairman of the BTS Hospital Governing Committee, Mr Ignatius Chan.

Awards were presented to individual donors as well as corporate, community, and academic partners.

Dr Libby Lee highlighted the multipronged strategies adopted by the BTS to promote habitual blood donation and encouraged wider public participation, including registration for bone marrow donation.

Dr Tony Ko noted that Hospital Authority staff contributed more than one thousand eight hundred units of blood over the past year.

Dr Lau Chor-chiu emphasised the collaboration between the BTS and local universities, with new Red Cross University Clubs established at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University.

Mr Ignatius Chan added that BTS visited thirteen universities and tertiary institutions in a University Blood Donation Marathon, collecting over two thousand eight hundred units of blood.

Among the donors, one thousand two hundred were first-time participants.

In total, approximately one hundred twenty-seven thousand eight hundred donors contributed nearly two hundred nineteen thousand two hundred units of blood over the year.

These were processed into more than three hundred seventy-two thousand one hundred units of blood products for clinical treatment in Hong Kong hospitals.

Elite Partnership Awards were presented to outstanding contributors across sectors:

Corporate Partners: Prudential Hong Kong Limited, Sino Group, Nan Fung Group, Link Asset Management Services Limited, Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited.

Community Partners: Tsz Shan Monastery, Rotary International District 3450, Scout Association of Hong Kong, Evangelical Free Church of China - Yan Fook Church.

Community Partners (Blood Donation Vehicle): Whampoa Garden Management Limited, Lung Mun Oasis, Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation.

Universities: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Secondary Schools: Shatin College, West Island School, Po Leung Kuk Wu Chung College, Discovery College, Buddhist Hung Sean Chau Memorial College, F.D.B.W.A. Szeto Ho Secondary School, Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School, King's College, PHC Wing Kwong College, Lai Chack Middle School.

The BTS continues to promote blood donation through education and outreach programmes in collaboration with local institutions and invites the public to contribute by becoming regular blood donors.
