InvestHK Concludes Canada Visit to Strengthen Business and Innovation Ties

Meetings with startups, investors, and universities highlight Hong Kong's gateway role to Asian markets
The Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK), Charles Ng, concluded a week-long visit to Canada on June 14, focusing on strengthening economic and investment ties between Hong Kong and Canada.

The visit spanned three cities—Waterloo, Toronto, and Montreal—from June 8 to 14.

During the visit, Mr Ng met with Canadian startups, investors, academic institutions, and business leaders to promote Hong Kong’s position as a global financial hub and strategic gateway to Mainland China and broader Asian markets.

The discussions emphasized Hong Kong’s strengths in wealth management, cross-border investment, and its growing innovation ecosystem.

At roundtables and networking sessions, Mr Ng presented Hong Kong’s value proposition to Canadian companies seeking international expansion.

He highlighted opportunities for collaboration in key sectors such as life sciences, medical technology, clean technology, and artificial intelligence.

He also toured research labs and innovation centres at Canadian universities to explore potential academic and commercial partnerships.

Mr Ng extended an invitation to Canadian entrepreneurs and investors to attend the upcoming Hong Kong FinTech Week x StartmeupHK Festival 2025, scheduled for November 3 to 7. The event aims to bring together global fintech leaders and high-growth companies to explore regional market opportunities and access funding and talent.

Event participants expressed strong interest in Hong Kong’s start-up ecosystem and its support mechanisms for overseas businesses.

Andrew Martinko, Investor Relations Officer at Velocity Incubator, University of Waterloo, noted the city’s commitment to technology innovation and its attractiveness to Canadian founders targeting Asian markets.

Shan Tao, Co-founder and CEO of XSIM AI Canada Inc, stated that involvement in the StartmeUpHK Festival had led to a conditional offer from the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation's Soft Landing Programme, facilitating the company's expansion into Hong Kong.

Cindy Ho, Partner at DS Avocats and Honorary Secretary of the Federation of Hong Kong Business Associations Worldwide, highlighted the long-standing trade and investment relationship between Canada and Hong Kong.

She underscored the relevance of the Hong Kong-Canada Income Tax Agreement and its role in supporting cross-border business development and sustainable economic growth.

The trip facilitated connections between Canadian and Hong Kong-based institutions and further positioned Hong Kong as a central platform for international companies expanding into Asia’s innovation and investment landscape.
