Hong Kong Breast Milk Bank Expands Services to Support Vulnerable Newborns

Over two hundred thirty donors contribute more than eight hundred litres of breast milk, aiding approximately ninety premature and critically ill infants since January twenty twenty-five
The Hong Kong Breast Milk Bank, established at the Hong Kong Children's Hospital, commenced operations on January sixth, twenty twenty-five.

In its initial phase, the bank focused on recruiting donors and collecting breast milk.

As of May sixteenth, over two hundred thirty lactating mothers have registered as donors, contributing more than eight hundred litres of breast milk.

This supply has benefited approximately ninety premature or critically ill newborns across nine public hospitals equipped with Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

The breast milk bank aims to collect around one thousand litres of breast milk annually to support between four hundred fifty to six hundred infants.

Donor mothers must be currently lactating with infants under one year old and undergo health screenings, including blood tests every three months, to ensure the safety and quality of the donated milk.

Collected breast milk undergoes pasteurisation, microbiological testing, and nutritional analysis before distribution.

The bank prioritises providing breast milk to infants born before thirty-two weeks of gestation or weighing less than one point five kilograms at birth, as well as those with severe conditions such as congenital heart disease or post-gastrointestinal surgery.

Processed donor milk is prescribed based on the clinical condition of each infant, with medical teams monitoring and adjusting intake to ensure optimal nutrition.

To facilitate donations, the Hong Kong Breast Milk Bank has established a service counter at the ground floor lobby of Tower B in Hong Kong Children's Hospital, offering counselling, breastfeeding support, and information.

Interested individuals can register through the bank's website or contact the service directly.

Informational pamphlets are also available at Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics Departments in public hospitals, as well as Maternal and Child Health Centres under the Department of Health.
