Hong Kong Health Authorities Emphasize Regular Blood Pressure Monitoring on World Hypertension Day

Nearly 30% of Hong Kong residents aged 15 to 84 have hypertension, with over 40% unaware of their condition
On May 17, 2025, the Hong Kong Department of Health (DH) marked World Hypertension Day by urging the public to monitor their blood pressure regularly and adopt healthier lifestyles to mitigate the risk of developing hypertension.

According to the Population Health Survey (PHS) 2020–22 conducted by the DH, 29.5% of non-institutionalized individuals aged 15 to 84 in Hong Kong were found to have hypertension.

Notably, over 40% of these individuals were unaware of their condition until they underwent health examinations arranged by the DH. Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure of 140 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) or higher, and/or a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or higher.

The survey also revealed that the prevalence of hypertension increases with age, rising from 4.9% among individuals aged 15 to 24 to 57.4% among those aged 65 to 84. Additionally, the average daily salt intake among Hong Kong residents aged 15 to 84 was 8.4 grams, exceeding the World Health Organization's recommended limit of less than 5 grams per day.

In 2023, Hong Kong recorded 1,097 deaths attributed to hypertensive heart disease, 46 deaths due to hypertensive renal disease, and 12 deaths resulting from both hypertensive heart and renal disease.

The DH recommends that healthy adults aged 18 or above have their blood pressure checked at least once every two years.

Individuals may require more frequent monitoring based on their blood pressure levels, age, overall cardiovascular risk profile, and medical advice.

To address the issue, the DH has implemented initiatives such as the Life Course Preventive Care Plan through District Health Centres and family doctors, aiming to enhance public awareness of disease prevention and promote healthy lifestyles.

Furthermore, the Chronic Disease Co-Care Pilot Scheme (CDCC Pilot Scheme) offers subsidized screening for Hong Kong residents aged 45 and above with no known history of diabetes or hypertension.

As of March 28, 2025, the scheme has expanded to include blood lipid testing for eligible participants, providing a more comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular disease risk factors.
